The Egyptian Premier League is the top division of football in Egypt and one of the strongest and most followed leagues in Africa and the Arab world. It is played under the umbrella of the Egyptian Football Association and brings together the big Cairo clubs with sides from Alexandria, the Suez Canal cities and the rest of the country.

Clubs meet home and away and collect points in the usual league format, although the number of teams and the exact structure have been adjusted in some seasons, including a split into championship and relegation groups. The top sides qualify for the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup, while the clubs at the bottom of the table drop into the second tier and are replaced by promoted teams.

The league was first played in 1948. Al Ahly of Cairo are by far the most successful club, and their derby with city rivals Zamalek is one of the biggest fixtures in African football.
